Mosque Attack in London

Monday, June 19, 2017

A vehicular attack outside a mosque in Finsbury Park, London, killed one person and injured several others shortly after midnight local time today. The attack happened on Seven Sisters Road, a 35-minute drive northeast from our London office.

IFSA-Butler has several spring semester students who are still in London, as well as some summer program students who arrived over the weekend. We have communicated with these students, and none was affected by this incident.

IFSA-Butler resident staff address issues of safety and security during the mandatory program orientation and throughout the program term. We encourage students to remain vigilant and aware of their surroundings at all times. Students are also given a 24/7 emergency number that they can call to reach a London resident staff member in the event of an emergency.

Fire in Grenfell Tower, London

Wednesday, June 14, 2017

A strong fire at Grenfell Tower in London killed at least six people, injured many others and caused extensive damage. IFSA-Butler has only a few students remaining in London, and our students do not live in or near Grenfell Towers, so we do not anticipate that any of our students were directly involved in this tragic situation.

New IFSA-Butler Cell Phone Policy

Students safety has always been a high priority for IFSA-Butler. In light of recent global incidents that have required our resident offices to verify the safety of hundreds of students, we are implementing a new cell phone policy that we believe will help ensure the safety and well-being of our students, as well as bring peace of mind to parents and advisors.

Effective summer 2017, all students on an IFSA-Butler or Alliance for Global Education program must bring with them, or intend to purchase upon arrival abroad, a cell phone that can exchange calls and texts with our resident office. This policy will help our staff worldwide to account for students, either individually or in large groups, in the event of an emergency.

Our staff will collect students' cell numbers at orientation and will notify the home campus study abroad office if we do not receive a working number from a student by the end of orientation.

IFSA-Butler may be able to assist with the purchase of a cell phone in the event of financial difficulty. We are happy to consider these requests on an individual basis.

London Terrorist Incidents

Sunday, June 4, 2017
2:30 p.m. EST

IFSA-Butler's resident office in England has located nearly all spring and summer students and verified that they were not involved in yesterday's attacks in London. We will continue to stay in contact with our students to answer their questions and concerns about this situation.

Saturday, June 3, 2017
8:20 p.m EST

IFSA-Butler is monitoring the situation in London, where police are investigating two separate incidents: a speeding van that struck pedestrians on London Bridge, and a stabbing at a restaurant nearby.

IFSA-Butler's resident offices in Ireland and Scotland have accounted for all students studying in those countries. Our England and Wales staff are working to verify that students in their countries are safe. They are also reminding students who are studying in and visiting London to stay tuned to news and to public service announcements, and to follow all safety precautions issued by public officials.

We will provide updates on this situation as needed.
